Staff and Opening Times

Librarian:

  • Mrs Z Feeney

The Learning Resource Centre, or Library, is a calm, welcoming place to study or read. It opens at 8.00 and is open throughout the day until 4.00 on Monday to Thursday, and 3.20 on Friday.

Homework Club takes place between 3.00 and 4.00 on Mondays to Thursdays, and we also organise and host numerous clubs during the week, including a Carnegie Medal shadowing group, Creative Writing Club, and Book Clubs for various year groups, including our new 6th Form and Staff Book Club. The LRC runs competitions and Reading Challenges throughout the school year, and enters students into national competitions.

We have designated ‘quite time’ during the week, when more focussed study or silent reading is encouraged.

Mrs Feeney is available to offer support and give recommendations, and the books, computers, and other resources give all students the opportunity to find something they enjoy reading, and complete research and work on time, to a high standard. We also have a gang of wonderful student Reading Ambassadors who are on hand to offer extra help.

Facilities

The LRC has a large collection of fiction and non-fiction books that can all be borrowed by students.

There are 10 computers and a printer, scanner, and photocopier that students can use for school-work purposes.

Desks are also available for students to complete individual or group work.

Events

The Library hosts author talks and events, and the Librarian, along with the Reading Ambassadors, plans a programme of changing displays to promote learning in a variety of subjects, or to reflect seasonal themes. There is a calendar of featured occasions, such as National Poetry DayNational Story Telling WeekWorld Book Day, and National Writing Day, and the LRC is also used for wider school events throughout the year.

Reading at Devizes School

Research shows conclusively that daily reading for pleasure is the most important factor effecting academic achievement across ALL subjects at school. The LRC supports Literacy and reading for pleasure across the whole school, with a focus on encouraging an inquisitive nature in all our students, to develop life-long learners.

Parents and carers can help students by valuing reading themselves, prompting them to remember their books each day, and encouraging them to read at home.

All Year 7, 8 and 9 students are enrolled on the Accelerated Reader scheme, and have at least one lesson in the LRC every fortnight. Students first take an online test to give them a reading range. They then choose one of the many books within that range to read. When they finish the book, they take an on-line quiz which gives them a score. This shows students how well they have read the book and guides them in their choice of their next book.

Students can find out for themselves if a book is on the Accelerated Reader scheme by clicking the link herehttps://www.arbookfind.co.uk/

The Library really is at the heart of Devizes School life, and we look forward to welcoming you and guiding you towards your perfect book.
