Celebrating the Diversity of European Languages

Hello! Bonjour! Willkommen! ¡Hola! Ciao! Cześć!

Every year, the 26th of September marks the European Day of Languages, and our students will be spending the day improving their foreign vocabulary. The teaching of a foreign language is already part of our curriculum, but this day gives us the opportunity to introduce other languages to students.

This year, to celebrate European Day of Languages, we have been hosting a languages week, which has included various special lessons in KS3, assemblies for year 8 and 9 students about the value of languages, a research quiz with cash prizes for year 7 and 8 students, and language-themed activities during our open evening. All teachers have been greeting their students in a foreign language and talking about their experiences of languages.

We have also been rewarding students who have made a positive start to the year with an afternoon watching a film in the language of their chosen country, which one year 8 student loved, saying "it was really cool!". There was even a special trip for a group of our year 8s to the Institut Francais last week!

Mr Ross, Head of Modern Foreign Languages, said: "This is a great opportunity to show that language learning is not just about French or Spanish, but about showing the value of languages in all areas of life."

By marking the day at Devizes School & Sixth Form College, we hope to broaden the horizons of our students. Being equipped with the ability to speak another language opens doors to lucrative jobs, exquisite culture, and mouth-watering food.
