Our House is named after Nelson Mandela who was the first black President of South Africa. He spent 27 years in prison for trying to overthrow the pro-apartheid government. After he left prison, he worked to achieve human rights and a better future for everyone in South Africa.
Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918. He was later given the name Nelson by a teacher at school. Because of his beliefs he was in prison from 1962 to 1990. He became President of South Africa in 1994, and retired in 1999.
Nelson Mandela became famous for his long fight against bad government and racial prejudice. He became a hero to people all over the world. As South Africa's President, he was respected for his courage and wisdom in bringing people together to live in peace.
‘IT ALWAYS SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL IT’S DONE’ is a quote from Nelson Mandela and is our House Motto. This reminds us of the need to strive for our best and never be disheartened when the going gets tough. As a House we know that if we set our mind to it nothing in this world is impossible and Mandela makes sure to remind us of that.
Our house Logo combines a picture of Nelson Mandela with the school Logo. This reminds us of the link we have at Devizes School with South Africa.
We remind ourselves to ensure that we treat everyone in a fair manner and challenge prejudice. Students also use a further quote to remind us to value the education we have.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
