The overriding aim of Devizes School Sixth Form is to maximise your academic achievement. This will enable you to access Higher Education or to get employment with better prospects than would otherwise be the case. Obviously you and we want more from the two years than just academic achievement. The personal profiles from our Year 13 Senior Students reflect some of the diversity we offer our students. If you are already a Devizes School student, there is an organised programme of induction into the Sixth Form in Year 11.
If you are currently a student at Lavington School, then, once again, a programme of induction is organised for you. If you are applying from somewhere else, we are happy to arrange individual visits for you to see what we have to offer. In this case, you should contact the Head of Sixth Form, Mr GR Evans, in the first instance. On entering the Sixth Form, each student will be allocated a personal mentor, with whom they will work for the next two years. The mentor will help the student to make a successful transition from GCSE to Sixth Form courses. Life in the Sixth Form demands a greater element of personal responsibility and students therefore have to undertake a lot of work outside the classroom. Study periods are allocated for this, in addition to time spent at home. Sixth Form mentors will arrange personal interviews with mentees, when work and aspirations for life after the Sixth Form will be discussed.
The mentor will help students in their applications for Higher Education, Further Education or employment and encourage them to make realistic choices. The mentor will also be responsible for co-ordinating any references which are required.
Each February staff and Sixth Form students elect a shortlist of Year 12 students who are interviewed for four Senior Student posts. These students represent the School at official engagements and also attend School functions as representatives of the Sixth Form.
A Sixth Form Committee is elected by the Sixth Form themselves at the same time, to organise activities for the Sixth Form and spearhead charity events at the School. They also organise social events to raise money for the Sixth Form Prom. Apart from this, Sixth Form students participate in other events like the annual ski trip and visits to theatres, art galleries and field trips for their specific subject areas. They involve themselves in Lower School events and some students choose to be mentors for younger students.
In March we visit the UCAS Convention at Bristol University and in April we attend an Open Day at Cardiff University.
Our aim is to make the Sixth Form your Springboard to Success and a rewarding experience for all, where students achieve academically, learn life skills and transition to become young adults.
