“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
Nelson Mandela

COURSE CONTENT

We follow the AQA syllabus. At AS Level, the course is separated into four main topic areas:
Los Medios
La Cultura de Todos los Días
La Vida Sana
La Familia y las Relaciones

Throughout these topic areas we will work on improving your knowledge and application of grammatical structures whilst vastly developing your vocabulary.  Your GCSE language skills will be used as a springboard to increasing your fluency in spoken and written Spanish as well as building your confidence in understanding listening and reading materials.

TEACHING
Successfully learning Spanish at AS and A2 Level requires a degree of academic ability; we will expect you to participate actively in lessons and seek out opportunities to use your growing language skills whenever appropriate.  You will be expected to make ample use of the online resources available as well as working independently, listening to Spanish radio, watching Spanish TV and reading Spanish newspapers and magazines whenever possible.
You will also be given the opportunity to further develop your language skills through supporting in KS3 and KS4 lessons where possible, trying to pass on your knowledge and inspire those pupils lower down the school.

ASSESSMENT
The AS Level examination consists of 2 parts; a speaking exam conducted by a teacher in school (30%) and a Listening, Reading and Writing exam.  During the year you can expect to be set a variety of tasks, many of which will allow you to express opinions on a variety of contemporary issues.  These may cover all four skill areas, involve researching a particular topic or preparing an oral presentation.

THE REQUIREMENTS
Grade B or above at GCSE is necessary; a sound grasp of basic grammatical structures is desirable.  Most importantly perhaps is the need for an enthusiasm for the language and a willingness to express yourself in Spanish.  You must be willing to work independently, reading and listening to Spanish outside of class to develop your understanding.

THE FUTURE
In our ever-changing world, having the ability to express yourself confidently in another language is becoming not simply desirable but more and more it is a necessity.  In a competitive employment market it is essential that you do anything you can to make yourself as appealing as you can to potential employers and languages are widely acknowledged to be a valuable asset.
At university the possibilities for continuing your study of a language are virtually endless, from Accountancy with Spanish to Zoology with Spanish.  Unemployment amongst foreign language graduates is very low.
