EDEXCEL/8HI01/9HI01
COURSE CONTENT
There are two topics in each of the two years.
At AS the topics studied are:
• Wars of the Roses and Henry VII
• Henry VIII
At A2 the topics studied are:
• The Middle East and the Arab-Israeli Conflict (subject to change)
• Britain and Challenge of Fascism (Focus on World War II)
TEACHING
The teaching will involve a variety of methods. There will be individual research. Group work and class discussion will also feature in the course. There will be the study of both primary and secondary evidence which will be written and visual. Students will be encouraged to develop their own ideas and substantiate them with evidence.
ASSESSMENT
Again final decisions have not been made. The two AS modules will be taken in the summer term. A2 will involve a coursework element. Classwork will be set on a regular basis and will include essays and investigations. Students will be expected to plan their essays and develop an understanding for the subject. There will also be factual recall tests as well as class tests and practice papers.
THE REQUIREMENTS
Enthusiasm for the subject is a must. A grade B is required at GCSE History and due to the high literacy requirement of History at A level, a B in English is also expected.
THE FUTURE
Students who study History at A level may go on to study a History degree at university and then continue in that area to be archivists, librarians, teachers or museum curators. However, being realistic, most students who take History at A level will not continue with the subject except for interest and pleasure. For these students History teaches students to investigate issues and to write reports. People in business are often given a body of information and asked to select relevant material and write a report for their bosses. Historians do this when they write essays and investigate for their coursework.
An interest in and a love of finding out about the past is something which for many people, is a lasting passion and allows them to find recreation in learning.

“History is a very enjoyable and interesting subject to study at ‘A’ level.”
“History is a very interesting and enjoyable ‘A’ level to take, as it involves using a range of skills. You can look at other people’s views as well as your own.... It is also a subject that is followed in and out of the classroom.”
