Health & Social Care AS and A2 Single Award and Double Award PDF Print

COURSE CONTENT
DOUBLE AWARD (OCR)
The course is an ideal qualification for those students who want a broad background to Health and Social Care. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of health, early-years care and education and issues affecting the Health and Social Care sector. At AS level the compulsory units will be Promoting Quality Care; Communication in Care Settings and Promoting Good Health. In addition, three more units will be chosen from Health and Safety in Care Settings; Caring for People with Additional Needs; Working in Early-Years Care and Education; Health as a Lifestyle Choice; Complementary Therapies and Caring for Older People. At A2 level there will be one compulsory unit, Care Practice and Provision. Five more units will be chosen from Understanding Human Behaviour, Anatomy and Physiology in Practice, Child Development; Mental Health Issues; Social Trends; and Research Methods in Health and Social Care.

SINGLE AWARD (OCR)
This course covers the same three AS compulsory units, the A2 compulsory unit and a choice of two further A2 units from the list above.

TEACHING
Students will actively experience the Health and Social Care environments. This will be achieved through a variety of approaches including work placements, links with local employers, case studies and research. Students will extract information from many sources, learning new skills and developing existing ones. They will use ICT, and will plan and evaluate their own work. Self improvement, self reliance and individual progress are central to this course.

ASSESSMENT
This is designed to give credit for what candidates can do as well as what they know. It is based on portfolio evidence, and 4 (Double Award), or 2 (Single Award) tests. Work will be set on a regular basis and deadlines for completion will be clearly stated. The Double Award is the equivalent of 2 A level subjects, and 2 grades A-E will be awarded to a candidate who meets the requirements.

THE FUTURE
Students who achieve this qualification will be fully prepared to enter a variety of HND or degree courses in Health and Social Care related subjects. These include Radiography, Nursing, Business, Teaching, Health Studies, Occupational Therapy or other degree courses.
