WJEC/2181/3181
AIMS
Film Studies is an exciting and popular course, and has been delivered by the English Department for five successful years. The current AS group have gained 100% A and B grades after their first year of study. Film Studies is designed to deepen students’ understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film, the major art form of the twentieth century, and a cultural form of great significance. Students will study cinema as an art form, a medium and as a social and economic institution. The WJEC specification will be followed.
COURSE CONTENT
There are four modules, two in every year. Two modules are internally assessed as coursework; the other two are exams.
AS
Exploring Film Form – coursework
British and American Film – exam
A2
Film Research and Creative Projects – coursework
Varieties of Film Experience: Issues and Debates - exam
Modules are assessed either by examination or through coursework.
TEACHING
Two teachers will teach the course. Group work and class discussion will form an important part of the course and allow students to develop their own ideas and thoughts. Students may be asked to prepare individual and group presentations as well as written assignments on the texts they study.
ASSESSMENT
Written tasks will be set and assessed regularly along with more formal examination practice. The coursework elements which include both written analysis and practical elements with the opportunity to create a short film are compulsory and are assessed internally and moderated by the Examination Board.
THE REQUIREMENTS
Students must enjoy watching and discussing films of a variety of genres. They will be fluent, accurate and competent writers and have gained A*-C grades in both English Language and English Literature GCSE.
THE FUTURE
Film Studies is becoming an increasingly popular subject which allows access to a range of university courses, including Film Theory, Criticism and History. It also can be combined with other subjects for those students who wish to pursue Media, Journalism, the Arts or English related subjects. Many Film Studies students enjoy the course so much that they pursue university courses in Film and Media, including Screen Writing.
NB: It is required that students watch films with an 18 Certificate, in an educational context. Please ensure you find this acceptable before applying to the course.
