AIMS

This course aims to develop interest in and appreciation of literature and literary study.  Through it students will be encouraged to read widely, independently and to engage creatively with a range of literary texts.  They will also develop and learn how to apply effectively, literary analysis.  The course also highlights the significance of context upon literature and literary theory.

COURSE CONTENT
The course is comprised of four units, two in each year.
At AS: F661 Poetry and Prose 1800-1945 this unit has two topic areas: critical analysis of poetry and analysis of narrative methods and effects.
F662 Literature post 1900 this is a coursework unit, the student will produce a close analysis of a section of chosen post 1900 literature OR a piece of re-creative writing based upon part of a chosen post 1900 text with a commentary.  The student will also produce an essay exploring the connection between text and interpretation.
At A2: F663 Drama and Poetry pre 1800 this unit focuses upon the study of a play by Shakespeare in relation to two other complementary texts.
F664 Texts in Time this is a coursework unit, the student will produce a close study of two genres within the same, or different time period.

TEACHING
This course is taught by two teachers.  Students will learn how to analyse language, imagery and verse.  They will also gain an understanding and appreciation of literary texts.  They will be expected to prepare presentations and to voice their own ideas.  Support and guidance will be given for the two substantial coursework folders but we are limited by Exam Board Rules: it is essential that students are prepared to work independently.

ASSESSMENT
F661 is a two hour written exam paper in which students will answer two questions, one on poetry and one on prose.
F663 is also assessed by a two hour written exam paper in which the students will answer one question on Shakespeare and one which demands a comparison of a drama with a poem.
F662 is a coursework folder comprising of one two tasks comprising of 2000 words. This is assessed internally before being moderated by the exam board.
F664 is a coursework folder comprising of a 3000 words comparative analysis of two texts. This is also assessed internally then moderated by the exam board.
Regular homeworks and assessed practice pieces will prepare students for the exams.

THE REQUIREMENTS
Students opting for this course must have a genuine enthusiasm for exploring literature and literary theory.  They should be prepared to engage with substantial wider reading and to analyse texts closely.  They will be observant  readers and listeners and effective writers.  They will have gained A*-B at GCSE English Literature.

THE FUTURE
English Literature is a popular A level subject.  The skills taught and developed within it make it a useful basis for the majority of courses at university level.
