COURSE CONTENT
For the first time the Science Department will be offering level 3 BTEC qualifications in Applied Science
In Year 12 students will study 3 mandatory units these are:
Unit 1: Fundamentals of science; Unit 2: Working in the science industry; Unit 4: Scientific practice, techniques
Once completed (at pass, merit or distinction level) students will achieve a level 3 certificate, this is broadly equivalent to 1 AS level (at different grades, see below)
TEACHING
Two members of staff will teach the course each will build on the others work. A variety of teaching methods are used performing experiments, analysing results and describing students’ findings. Research will play a big part in the course.
ASSESSMENT
Students work will be assessed through a portfolio of students work. This will be made up of assignments, approximately 4 for each unit of work. These assignments will be similar to those set in level 2 BTEC Science.
THE REQUIREMENTS
Students must be prepared to be organised and committed to their studies. An interest in science is essential and a desire to pursue a scientific career is desirable
• BTEC Extension Certificate at a Pass grade
• GCSE grade C in Core and Additional science
• This qualification will provide an ideal route of further study for students who have studied BTEC in key stage 4 or students who studied GCSE but haven't met the entry requirements for AS levels in science.
THE FUTURE
If students continue into year 13 they move onto a 'subsidiary diploma', this is broadly equivalent to 1 A level. Initially the school will offer students the chance to specialise in Applied Chemistry. However if demand is sufficient Applied Biology & Applied Physics are possible options for students. Successful students could go onto university in a number of subjects or would be ideally positioned to pursue a career in a science laboratory environment.
Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science (AS)
• Distinction* is equivalent to one AS grade A* (70 UCAS points)
• Distinction is equivalent to one AS grade A (60 UCAS points)
• Merit is equivalent to one AS grade C (40 UCAS points)
• Pass is equivalent to one AS grade E (20 UCAS points)
Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (A2)
• Distinction* is equivalent to one A2 grade A* (140 UCAS points)
• Distinction is equivalent to one A2 grade A (120 UCAS points)
• Merit is equivalent to one A2 grade C (80 UCAS points)
• Pass is equivalent to one A2 grade E (40 UCAS points)
