Year 7 English/Maths Catch up

The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium provides schools with an additional funding for each year 7 pupil who did not achieve at least level 4 in reading and/or maths at the end of key stage 2.

This funding to provide additional support for students who joined our year 7 (in September 2012 and each year since) was used to:

  • subsidise year 6 students to attend the Literacy and Numeracy Summer School
  • Create and resource extra mathematics and English classes to follow a catch-up programme
  • Create and resource additional literacy lessons
  • Fund the Year 7 Accelerated Reader Programme

How the school assessed the effect on attainment:

  • To supplement the KS2 tests and provide baseline assessments, students sat CATs tests to give the school additional information about students’ verbal and non-verbal skills.
  • Those following the literacy programme had their reading ages calculated and retested throughout year 7.
  • Those in the extra mathematics and English classes were teacher-assessed 4 times in the academic year and progress reported to parents
