Devizes School teenager Alex Sharman swam his way to medals at the recent South West Swimming Championships held in Plymouth. Alex, who is a member of Trowbridge ASC and trains at the University of Bath with Team Bath AS Performance Swimming team, qualified for seven events but opted to only compete in four of these. He finished 13th in the 50m Backstroke but made the finals in the 50m, 100m and 200m Butterfly events. In the 50m event Alex qualified in 10th place for the final, but a strong personal best saw a 5th place finish. In the 100m event, Alex qualified in 3rd place. However, a strong second length saw him finish with the silver medal. In the 200m event, arguably his strongest, Alex qualified in second place. The final was exciting to watch as he and Team Bath counterpart Ethan McNeil were neck and neck for the entire distance – Alex eventually coming out with the gold medal as Age 16 Regional Champion by a mere 0.09s – both swimmers finishing 4 seconds clear of the rest of the field.
Alex now has an anxious wait until early June to see if he has qualified to swim at either the British or English summer swimming championships.
*Many thanks to Mr & Mrs Sharman for these words and a huge well done to Alex from us all at Devizes School!
