Having qualified for the Wiltshire County Cup the previous evening after a battling 2-0 winning performance against Wyvern College, the Devizes U12 football team faced Wootton Bassett at Stanley Park in the final of the County Cup.
Coming off a high from two weeks earlier where Devizes had beaten Kingdown School 4-2 after extra time in the Wiltshire League Cup Final, the team started in a confident and assertive style. The team were playing up the slight hill and into the wind but never looked troubled by a Wootton Bassett team who soon found themselves on the back foot due to the accurate passing and pace of the Devizes players.
The Devizes team looked hungry for success and came out on top in the majority of the 50/50 battles throughout the pitch. The nerves were settled when Kristian A, who as per usual commanded the midfield and lead by example, scored the opening goal thanks to some good interplay and skill by Harvey S, who was his usual skilful self on the right of midfield, crossed for Kristian to tuck away into the goal.
Wootton Bassett looked dejected and struggled to get back into the game due to the pressure the Devizes players applied when Wootton Bassett had the ball. Josh B typically set the pace of the pressing and was a menace to the midfield players and fought for all the loose balls.
Against the run of play with 2 minutes to go before half time, Wootton Bassett scored a deflected goal from outside the area after the Devizes defence misjudged the wind and bounce of a long ball from the goalkeeper.
The second half saw Devizes play down the slight hill with the wind behind them and never saw Wootton Bassett trouble Devizes, largely in part due to the outstanding physical defensive performance from Archie G and the intelligent defending from Lleyton E.
With 15 minutes to go Devizes had created numerous chances throughout the second half, with Will M and Miles H D having tormented the Wootton Bassett defence, the supporters and manger were left rather anxious due to the team failing to convert the chances to a goal. However up popped Dominic B to settle the nerves by showing calmness to slot the ball past the keeper to score the vital goal. After that Kristian A played with authority and dictated the pace of the game and was supported by his teammates as Devizes comfortably held the high line. With 5 minutes to go Archie G settled the game with an audacious strike from the half way line which flew into the top corner. There was no doubt he meant it as this was his second wonder strike of the season and summed up his man of the match performance.
When the final whistle blew the celebrations began on what had been an outstanding season for Devizes School who had won the Wiltshire League, Wiltshire League Cup and the Wiltshire County Cup.
