Admissions policy 2018-2019

Application to Devizes School for entry into Year 7 on 1 September 2019

Parents/Guardians who wish to apply for a place at Devizes School in year 7 commencing 1st September 2019 must complete the LA’s Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF) or apply online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk and return it to The School Admissions Team, County Hall, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, BA14 8JB by 31st October 2018 in order to be considered in the normal admissions round.

The admission number is 223 students and the Governing Body will award 223 places.  All applicants will be sent letters from the LA informing them of the result of their application on 1st March 2019.  Offers of places should be accepted by 18th March 2019.  Unsuccessful applicants will be informed by the School of their position on the reserve list.

In Year Admissions

For admissions during and from 2018-19, as per the local authority co-ordinated scheme for admissions, all applicants applying for any school place must complete an application form which should be returned directly to the Local Authority and not the school.  The applicant may or may not live in Wiltshire.

Over-subscription

Where applications for admission at age 11 exceed the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied, in the order set out below, to decide on which children to admit:

1.      Children in public care.

2.      Children living in the civil parishes of All Cannings, Bishops Cannings, Chirton, Devizes, Etchilhampton, Roundway, Patney, Marden, Potterne, Poulshot, Rowde and Stert.

3.      Where there are medical grounds for admitting the child (supported by a doctor's certificate).

4.      Children who have an older brother or sister who will be attending the school at the time they are admitted.  This to include step, half and foster siblings.

5.      Children who have siblings born at the same time e.g. twins, triplets etc.

6.      Other children where vacancies remain.

Tiebreaker If there are more applicants which meet a criterion than there are places remaining, priority will be given within that criterion to children who live nearest to the school based on distances supplied by the LA.

NB  The Governing Body will consider application forms from students who seek admission at age 10.  Supporting evidence will be required to show that he/she is likely to cope academically and socially with early entry.  A report from the primary school and an interview with staff of Devizes School will be required.

Policy on entry to 6th Form

Each application to the Sixth Form is considered on its individual merits, however the basic admission requirement is a minimum of 5 GCSE passes (or the equivalent) at grade 4 or above, from at least 4 subjects, which should include English and Maths. Applicants will not be accepted into the Sixth Form if they have neither Maths nor English at GCSE grade 4.  In addition most courses require specific subject GCSE grades e.g. to take Mathematics a grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics is a requirement. Such specific course requirements are clearly stated on the relevant subject page in the 6th Form Prospectus.
