Parents and Devizes School
Seven parents sit on the Governing Body and are elected by a ballot of all parents every four years. Parent, subject staff and tutor consultation evenings are held once a year for each year group and reports are issued. A weekly newsletter, issued on a Friday, keeps parents informed of events in the school. A parent's handbook is issued yearly.
The involvement of parents in the school is very important to us. We welcome the expertise that parents are able to bring into the school: talking to pupils about their work, arranging industry visits, work experience, accompanying school trips or finding materials useful for school courses. Devizes School Parent Group has also been set up which provides a forum for parents to discuss the day to day issues at school and also raise funds. Lots of successful fund raising events have been run and we are always on the look out for new ideas!
After School Detentions
Devizes School is determined to continue to raise standards of work and behaviour, and we believe that this is best done by praise and encouragement. However, there will be occasions when the school needs to impose after school detentions in order to raise such standards. The school is firmly committed to involving parents in the pursuit of this aim, and will contact home to involve them with the problem when a detention is imposed.
At least 24 hours notice will be given to the child and parents about the reasons for the detention.
When children are detained after school the tasks that are set will be of value and appropriate to their educational needs. They will be detained for a maximum of one hour unless other arrangements have been agreed with parents. This is in accordance with the Education Act.
Emergency School Closures
If there is a need for an emergency closure of Devizes School e.g. through bad weather conditions, an announcement will be made on B.B.C. Wiltshire Sound and on G.W.R. radio stations.
