EDEXCEL/8372/9372
COURSE CONTENT

The course involves studying from three areas of Mathematics - Pure, Statistics and Decision Mathematics. This course must be taken alongside the Mathematics with Mechanics option. Further Mathematics is not simply for those who wish to study Mathematics, Engineering or Physics at university. It is for people who have an interest in the subject beyond the single A level. It is relevant to all sciences, economics, business studies, and social sciences such as Psychology and Law.

YEAR 12
This is a two year course. There is no award at the end of year 12.

The following units will be covered:

Further Pure 1: Developing the ideas of Core 1 and Core 2 as well as introducing matrices, complex numbers and numerical methods.
Statistics 1: An introduction to explanatory Statistics, correlation and regression, and probability modelling.
Decision 1: Looking at algorithms used in transportation problems, as well as network flows and shortest path problems.

YEAR 13
Leads to an A level in Further Mathematics, complementing the A level in Mathematics (with Mechanics).

The units taken in Year 13 are:

Further Pure 2:
Further Pure 3:
Developing the ideas of Core 3 and Core 4 as well as introducing polar co-ordinates, 2nd order differential equations, and Taylor Series.
Statistics 2: Taking the ideas studied in S1 a stage further, developing hypothesis testing and further work on the normal distribution.

ASSESSMENT
Work is set and marked each week. A percentage is given, as well as an effort grade. Tests are also regularly set. Pupils’ progress will be carefully monitored by the department.

THE REQUIREMENTS
Students should have at least GCSE grade A at Higher Tier, and preferably grade A*.

THE FUTURE
The Mathematics Department has an excellent record of preparing students for A level Further Mathematics.  Students go on to study a variety of subjects at university including Mathematics, Sciences, Social Sciences and Engineering.  A level Further Mathematics is very highly regarded by both universities and employers, and there is evidence that people with A level Mathematics earn up to 10% more in the long run.
