About Devizes School - Introduction

I am delighted to introduce you to Devizes School and give you a flavour of the ethos and culture that makes this such a special place to learn and work.  Students, staff and parents are incredibly proud of their school. I had the privilege of taking up the Principal Post from Easter 2016. This is my second headship; I wanted to join Devizes School because the students and staff are wonderful ambassadors for what is great about education and lifelong learning. Staff are committed and passionate about their subjects and students are engaging and positive. I am fiercely ambitious for the school and the young people that we serve in our local community. I aim to build upon the current strengths of the school and particularly the strong work of my predecessors.

Devizes School is a Good School (Ofsted 2015) with learning at the heart of all that we do.  We are a very forward-thinking school, always keen to do better.  It is a very happy place in which to learn and work.  Many who visit the school throughout the year comment on the calm and purposeful environment they find.  The positive relationships between students and staff, based on mutual respect, are at the heart of high standards of teaching and learning which result in all students making good progress.  “The school is a calm and supportive place in which to learn.”  Ofsted 2015.

Students are polite and courteous to each other and to adults.  “The behaviour of students is good.” Ofsted 2015.

The appreciation of the wider world is a particular strength of the school and was acknowledged by our last Ofsted inspection.  “The extensive range of extra-curricular activities enables students to participate in sporting and cultural events that would not otherwise be accessible to them.”  Ofsted 2015.

Ofsted has graded the school GOOD on the last 4 occasions it has visited demonstrating our consistent focus for high standards at Devizes School.

Our results again last summer show that our students can and do achieve the highest possible grades, many going onto the top Russell Group Universities and others securing places at their preferred Universities all over the UK which will best support them in their intended career path.

At KS4 we have a similar story with many students achieving the top grades of A * , A  and B grade and either securing places in our Sixth Form or going onto their preferred choices including apprenticeships, employment and training or other similar destinations. Results have increased for three consecutive years.

Every young person coming to Devizes School has great potential and we, as a school, will ensure all young people are valued and supported to make the most of their potential.  We are keen to “Raise Aspirations and Build Futures” for all the young people in the school and prepare them for the next stages in their lives.  We have a very strong system of support throughout our Careers Service and PSHEE lessons that gives appropriate and timely support for the next, crucial decisions regarding their futures as well as an understanding of wider social issues.

We want students to feel happy and successful in school, enjoy their learning, be kind and make a unique contribution to the life of the school. Our school values are pride, courage and resilience; we want students to be enriched by their experiences at school, both academically and personally.

Our Sixth Form has an enviable record, over the last few years, of being consistently amongst the best performing sixth forms in Wiltshire.  In 2013 the Sixth Form moved into its large, brand new, state of the art Sixth Form Centre.  This combines traditional architectural features with large, modern, hi-tech study areas and contemporary, vibrant leisure spaces to give students a truly inspirational learning environment.  Another landmark development for the school was finished in 2014, providing a completely refurbished “Applied Learning Centre” containing a bright, spacious learning environment and utilises all the very latest technologies for learning in the 21st century.

We have very high expectations at Devizes School and this is reflected in our students’ appearance, behaviour and attitudes towards learning.  Students take a real pride in their school, as do all staff and all are fully committed to “Raising Aspirations and Building Futures” for all your people.  The school’s curriculum provides opportunities for students to study subjects which are well-suited to their needs, aspirations and talents.  “Students are well prepared for the next steps in their education, training or employment.”  Ofsted 2015

The atmosphere and ethos in the school has been continually strengthened over the years, particularly through our disruption free learning system.  The pastoral care and development of our students is one we take very seriously and the smaller learning communities within year groups is a real strength of the school.

Devizes is a great school and I am very ambitious to provide even greater opportunities and higher aspirations. In February 2017 we joined The White Horse Federation Multi Academy Trust who provide us with even greater capacity to improve.

It is always my privilege to welcome new students onto this exciting learning journey together. If you are interested in joining our school your son/daughter will be made very welcome.  Please contact the school to arrange a personalised visit. We will be very happy to show you and your child/children around our school so you can see first-hand what makes it so special.
